Temporary Downtime: A New Medical Watchdog Organization About Gender Dysphoria & Future Plans for the Homoarchy
I started The Homoarchy to explore how lesbian and bisexual women can have healthier same-sex relationships. In the process of researching that subject, it became apparent to me that the current enthusiasm to medically transition the increasing numbers of children, teens, and young adults, along with the implosion of a supportive lesbian community, is risking the health and safety of not just lesbian youth, but increasing numbers of bisexual and heterosexual youth coming out as trans. I have only become more alarmed since I wrote:
The answer to that blog post is that they do. Not only that, but the health implications can be severe for young people who transition even if their trans-identification remains until adulthood. As a result of these realities, I am involved in a new LGBT organization designed to be a voice for growing numbers of LGBT people who are disturbed by the growing numbers of medicalized, gender nonconforming youth. The project is called Gender Health Query.
The mission statement reads as follows:
To prevent the over-medicalization of gender nonconforming youth. To prevent harm resulting from medical treatments on trans-identified minors. And to address confusion and rights conflicts that arise from new ideologies about gender (within and outside of the LGBT community). This will be done through outreach to the mental health and medical community, LGBT orgs, parents, schools, media, and the public.
This site is only on temporary hiatus. I have future plans to turn this into a fully-funded site to support homosexual rights and a space to celebrate same-sex love and desire for homosexuals and bisexuals with same-sex partners. The long term goal will be to create a hub of activism around supporting same-sex relationships specifically.
